Dentokan Indianapolis is a not-for-profit, officially sanctioned and recognized member of the Sekai Dentokan Bugei Renmei and the Nippon Seibukan Academy. We are dedicated to the preservation of the Dentokan branch of Hakko-Ryu Jujutsu, which traces its lineage to the Daito-Ryu tradition of Aikijujutsu and includes sophisticated strikes, joint locks, takedowns, throws, chokes and other methods designed to humanely control one or more aggressors.

Our curriculum also includes Iaijutsu, a traditional form of Japanese swordsmanship that emphasizing drawing and cutting. Iaijutsu is an integral part of our curriculum as the empty-handed techniques of Jujutsu find their origins in sword work. Proficiency in swordsmanship leads to a dramatic and noticeable improvement in balance and precision.

We train in traditional Japanese arts and in a traditional manner, which requires a strong conviction of character. Such an intense and focused environment requires us to be selective in our membership. Although the techniques we practice can result in injury if unnecessary force is applied, we believe in avoiding injury refusing to train with or admit any person whose ego or lack of empathy may result in injuries. Our goal is not to increase or ranks, but to cultivate a small but dedicated group of martial artists who are interested in developing their character as well as heiho and waza.
